“I don’t believe in work-life balance”: Narayana Murthy defends 70-Hour workweek

Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has reiterated his position on the 70-hour workweek, stating that he does not believe in the concept of ‘work-life balance.’

Murthy also voiced his disappointment over India’s transition from a six-day to a five-day workweek in 1986, emphasizing, “I don’t believe in work-life balance.”

His earlier comments advocating for a 70-hour workweek in India for steady development sparked a social media debate about work-life balance and the mental health of employees, particularly in large corporations.

Murthy added “Prime Minister Modi probably works 100 hours a week.”

Narayana Murthy shared insights from his career, revealing that he worked long hours — up to 14 hours a day, six and a half days a week — on his professional tasks. “I’m very proud of it,” he remarked.

Philanthropist and author Sudha Murthy, Narayana Murthy’s wife, also shared that a 70-hour workweek was common in their family and revealed that her husband often worked as many as 90 hours a week.
