Nalanda reawakens: Revitalizing the world’s first residential university

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar. He unveiled a commemorative plaque and participated in a tree-planting ceremony.

Established in the fifth century, Nalanda University was a distinguished hub of learning that drew students from around the world. Flourishing for 800 years, it met its demise in the 12th century at the hands of invaders.

The new campus comprises two academic blocks housing 40 classrooms, with a total seating capacity of about 1,900. Additionally, there are two auditoriums, each capable of seating 300 people. The student hostel accommodates approximately 550 students.

The building is designed as a ‘Net Zero’ Green Campus, ensuring self-sustainability through solar power installations.

More than 500 years before Oxford University was founded, Nalanda University housed nine million books and attracted thousands of students from around the world.

The educational hub was founded by Buddhist monks during the reign of the Gupta dynasty and is a famous Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage city.
