2,000 years old Roman cargo ship found off Italy

Italy’s Carabinieri police announced the discovery of an ancient Roman cargo ship wreck dating back over 2,000 years. The ship was found off the coast near Rome, precisely near the port of Civitavecchia, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of the Italian capital. The wreck rests on a sandy seabed at an impressive depth of about 160 meters (525 feet), as stated in their announcement.

The police art squad, responsible for safeguarding Italy’s invaluable cultural heritage, reported the discovery of the relic. Using a remotely operated robot, they located and filmed the artifact on the sea floor. However, there is no confirmation yet on whether experts will attempt to retrieve the relic and its precious cargo.
